This November Sam and the team at AMA are proudly supporting Movember!

Since relatively humble beginnings back in 2003 in Australia, the Movember movement has grown to be a truly global one; inspiring support from over 4 million people, more commonly known in the Movember circles as Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, around the world.

The Movember Foundation currently runs official campaigns in 21 countries, however, there are known pockets of support in virtually every corner of the world, from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro and everywhere in between.   And now including Warana QLD.

The Movember Foundation is the leading global organisation committed to changing the face of men’s health.  To date the Movember community has raised $580 million and this work is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.

The Movember Foundation challenges men to grow moustaches during Movember (formerly known as November), to spark conversation and raise vital funds for its men’s health programs. To date, 4 million moustaches have been grown worldwide, and they are still growing!

Here are some facts about Men’s Health you may have not known:-

• The average life expectancy for Australian men is almost five years less than women
• 1 in 8 Australian men experiences depression at any given time
• 1 in 2 Australian men will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85
• Nearly two thirds of Australia’s population is overweight, with men more likely to be overweight or obese than women
• Every hour more than 4 men die from potentially preventable conditions in Australia

And why is this happening?
• Lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men face
• Men not openly discussing their health and how they’re feeling
• Reluctance to take action when men don’t feel physical or mentally well
• Men engaging in risky activities that threaten their health
• Stigmas surrounding mental health
• Men are less likely than women to seek help for health concerns, and also less likely to use health care services

The Movember Foundation aims to change this way of thinking by putting a fun twist on this serious issue and at AMA they have done just that!

Take a look at the mos grown this month at AMA and hear what the AMA team think about their new look mos!

“Its Great. If I lick my lips I can taste my breakfast juice at lunch”.
“Very Itchy”.
“I look 10 years older”’
“Although it’s frustrating, its raising awareness for men’s health”.
“It’s a chance to do something different - although I wouldn't have one permanently”.
